31th Latin Community Newsletter

Dear Latins,

I would also like to inform you as follows:

Completed:

  • Lecture: “The Latin Community of Cyprus and its Historical Antecedents: Clergy and Laity” by Dr. Nicos Koureas, Senior Researcher at the Cyprus Research Center, which took place at   CVAR in Nicosia on 22nd March.

  • Presentation: “Improving Cyprus’ Health Status: Biobank.cy” by Ms Maria Kyratzi, Manager of Biobank.cy.  The presentation was held under my auspices of Fr. Ibrahim Khita, at St Charbel Church Hall in Limassol on 26th March.

Through the voluntary participation of Cypriot citizens from all Communities (including Latin) the Biobank aims to identify special characteristics in the DNA of Cypriots that may be responsible for genetic or other diseases. The ultimate goal is that the knowledge which will be acquired, will be used as a tool for better disease prevention and prognosis as well as in the development of new treatments for the Cypriot population.

Anyone interested to vvolunteer should call the tel no 7777 1838.

In progress:

  • Commencement of project for the creation of the Archive of Oral Tradition for the Latin Community

The creation of a digital archive of the Latin Community has been one of my principal goals which I had set as Representative. With the support of the Ministry of Education, this aim is being fulfilled: the archive project has been namedÊÁÑÌÅËÁ” and was launched at a press conferee held on 24 Feb  with the  previous Minister of Education.

This research project is being undertaken by an academic team of the University of Cyprus in which two members of our community are participating as researchers, Marios Siammas and Costas Shahinian.
  • Pancyprian Student Arts Competition titled “The lasting impact of Latins on contemporary Cyprus”

For a second consecutive year, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Youth section of our association “Thriskeftiki Omada Latinon Kyprou” is running a student arts competition which will encourage students to learn about the (cultural and historic) contribution of the Latins in today’s Cyprus.

The competition is open to pupils from the ages of primary and secondary education, whether they are attending state, private or technical schools. Individual or group submissions can be in either a literary form  (e.g. poem, story, narration) or a figurative form (e.g. visual art work, video, musical composition, illustrated story etc)

The award ceremony for the winning submissions will be held at «Óðßôé ôùí Ëáôßíùí» in June 2023

Coming soon:

  • Afternoon event for children (5-10 years old) at «Óðßôé ôùí Ëáôßíùí», Nicosia

The association “Thriskeftiki Omada Latinon Kyprou” in collaboration with my office, is organising an afternoon event for children (ages 5-10 years) to be held on Saturday 27 May on the occasion of International Children’s Day (which is celebrated a few days later).

In closing, I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a HAPPY EASTER 2023!
